82. Socially distant Dogs part 2

82. Socially distant Dogs part 2

The Dogs held back some footage from the special March 26 remote, and here it is. Just like last time we are again only 1/3 in the Shed, as we continue to be physically distant but spiritually close. Like everyone we have lots of COVID-19 related thoughts, from struggling businesses to supply chains to how we’re feeling. If we talk about art again, it’ll be a relief, right? Good. We also get to remember mercury thermometers (and how to dispose of them) and get a report on the Museum of Vancouver (hint: probably don’t dress up much for that visit—our kind of place!)

The Dogs are not—repeat!—NOT in the Shed this week! Except one of them. In this special and atypically timely episode (recorded just three days before we’re posting it) the dogs get together via videoconference and chat about tons of listener mail, our positive feels for how Canada is handling the pandemic, tumbleweeds, morning glory, Sons of the Pioneers, and a Shuttle creep.

80. Pressing all the buttons

Episode 80, recorded well before The Great Lockdown, encapsulates three world views around how well recycling is working. As usual RJ defends the most upbeat view, and the show note links support it—have a look as good news is hard to come by in these difficult days. There’s lots of other content here, too, in particular coronavision recommendations, medium rare whale meat, plus the usual modicum of laughs—enlightenment and fun will both be found. A great way to fill the hour from a social distance!

The dogs spend some time discussing COVID-19, because they believe you haven’t heard enough on the topic. Just a sec… ah… AHCHOO! Excuse us, we’ll be sure to sneeze into our elbows next time. Please, have another nacho. Other topics: Lynn Beyak goes toxic on residential schools, fun jokes for strangers, The Masked Singer, PJ is run ragged chasing the shuttlecock, and a shuttle tale or two to round out another eclectic podcast. Enjoy the show!

We’re sure you’ve often wondered, “What do guys like these watch, anyway?” This episode is where you find out, along with some other stuff, why songs and albums are often labeled “(ASCAP)” or “(BMI)”, the slack way to plug radiator leaks, and what’s going on with traffic fatalities in Oslo. It’s another eclectic mix of whatever flashes across our mental news ticker, in other words. Play along!

KJ walks us through the highs and lows of a 42 year relationship with his ‘64 International Harvester Travelall, with more than half-a-million miles (pause and take that in) of friendly waves, hard work, satisfaction, and frustration, all coloured green. Along the way we talk about seeing Lucy’s outstanding performance in “Dissolve”, greet some new listeners, and enjoy a Tale and some Listener Mail. It’s a safe, comfortable, and unique ride on the audio highway; come along, bring your friends, we have lots of room!

The Dogs spend episode 76 immersed in the realms of art and cinema—foreign ground indeed for your favourite slackers. We take a long, hard look at the new $5 million chandelier under the Granville Street Bridge, but then recover our good humour as we breeze through “Parasite”, Guillermo del Toro, and some choice Netflix selections. If you’re always looking for ways to kill forty-six minutes and eighteen seconds, look no further: this episode is full of art!

You’re dying to find out what the Dogs got for Christmas, amiright? We also managed to squeeze in a mathematical view of sunrise and sunset and thoughts on options to provide for ourselves should we become destitute. Also, you always wanted to hear us pretend to know what they mean when they say “north of 60”. It’s wholesome, heartwarming and maybe even educational. Have a taste. Speaking of which we even have a dietary recommendation!

The Dogs grew up hearing radio ads for the Unitarian Service of Canada, as well as a lot of other radio and TV commercials. We’re looking for help identifying a couple of them in this episode. We’re happy to read a lot of listener mail, and are fascinated to learn that Joni didn't write “Twisted” and “Centerpiece”; nonetheless we’d like to hear the old Red Cross TV spot once more. We acknowledge our Boomerosity and reveal Google Trekker, but just can’t find those old videos. Dirty darn!

Join KJ for a first hand reminiscence from his recent stage work. We also cover a bundle of great listener mail, RJ’s Gold Standard TV series viewing recommendations, a modestly successful bit of media plagiarism from PJ, and even a baseless accusation that the CBC is stealing our ideas—and this is just the “cultural” part of Episode 73. There’s also a drainage-oscopy, a Tale From the Shuttle (the best one of two!), and another sure-fire money making scheme. It just goes from one fun thing to another!

A conversation with a shuttle customer prompts a discussion in the Shed about our buy-in on mediums and the Other Side. That leads naturally into whether we should try to do a best hits summer filler podcast, which inevitably meant we had to talk about PJ’s vegan Thanksgiving and a trombone rendition of the US national anthem. There’s all that and a lot more in 40 minutes of wide-ranging yet totally connected conversation. Enjoy!

In an unusually focused episode, the Shed Dogs review RJ’s recent extensive road trip (in the Whole Earth Catalogue, it was Divine Right’s Trip), get exciting news on acting jobs coming up for KJ, and struggle to predict the outcome of the last federal election. We do touch on home repairs and a Shuttle tale, too, but mostly it’s tacos in Rawlins and Calamity Jane’s tombstone.

Longtime friend and listener Candace of Kanata, Ottawa, Edmonton, Resolute Bay, Vancouver, and Rossland joins PJ & KJ in the Shed to catch up on where the decades went and what’s going on these days. We hear about KJ’s new GP assistant and PJ’s favourite ever tax consultant as well as how canny car owners like Candace deal with gas tanks that leak but are just too expensive to fix. In an episode that flirts with explosion the whole way, we manage to just stay warm!

69. Dogged Dead or Alive

In a warmhearted episode the Dogs of the Shed get updates on RJ’s foosball life, on KJ’s Shed life, and on PJ’s Shuttle life. RJ waxes rhapsodic about a young Steve McQueen in the old Wanted Dead or Alive TV series, and KJ finds out that A&W cooks their eggs fresh, at least in the middle of the day. As if all that wasn’t enough, we also cram in Apple product recommendations from RJ as well as a call for brilliant ideas for reusing old car batteries from PJ. All the energy packed into less than an hour! You can’t go wrong here.

We marvel at how RJ uses yet another list to prepare to explore the wide world while using an otoscope to explore the micro world. In between, we discuss Aziz Ansari, Shelley Duvall as Wendy Torrance, ear worms and how to get rid of them, and the question of whether the government, Aziz, and who knows who else is stealing ideas from us. It’s a little paranoid, occasionally disgusting, and a lot of fun.

A brief and invigorating romp through an invasion of moths we fail to correctly identify*, the worst dreams we ever had, and a bizarre highway plan from the 1960s. On the upside, we are also treated to a look at KJ’s blossoming career as an artist and a in-depth review of RJ’s apex home inventory system. It’s an episode that’s sure to reassure you about how well-adjusted you actually are! See inside for how to view the images.

It’s pouring out but warm and dry in the shed. In true Dog fashion and in no rush to be let outside, we review Listener Mail, Tales From the Shuttle, and what was up with those crazy pics of KJ seen on Facebook last August. We also take some time to recall playing guns as kids—remarkably similar experiences for all three of us in two different countries. And whatever did happen to Life Savers, anyway? We get our kicks… in episode 66!

The Dogs are happy to welcome special guests and longtime listeners Leigh of Courtney and Moira of Steveston into the Shed for an informative and sunny 65th episode, in which we discover what we never knew about pickleball and eating cereal. Moira and RJ compare notes on architecture tours they’ve been on in Vancouver, and while KJ continues his beach vacation at Christina Lake, the four of us in the Shed puzzle over PJ’s pole dancing skills and fondly remember Johnny LaRue’s unmet crane shot dreams.

All the wooks out there can relive the experience, while the non-Shambhalized will find this an eye opener!
